Yesterday morning I was catching up on Facebook when I came upon a status update that startled me. It was from a buddy of mine who used to live in San Francisco but now lives in North Carolina. After reading his profile, I realized that he was desperately crying for help. Many of the status updates were quite disturbing ("I want to die!"). I reached out to a couple of his friends and asked them if they knew anything. They both wrote back and said he was going through a very difficult period (DUI, break-up with his boyfriend, money issues, etc). One of them forwarded the conversation he had with my buddy. When I saw the line "I think I am depressed and have calculated ways to end it all," I took it upon myself to call the Suicide Hotline in North Carolina to seek assistance. I gave them my friend's information, including cell phone number, and they told me they would follow-up with him.
This morning I called my buddy to see if I could get a hold of him. He answered and we chatted about his issues and what he could do about them. He thanked me for calling the Suicide Hotline and said they talked to him for a while and gave him names and phone numbers of doctors that could help him. I highly encouraged him to seek their assistance.
If you see that a friend is in need, take the time to try and help...it may just save their life!
UPDATE: His Facebook status now reads "____ appreciates his friends and is trying to get through this very difficult" - Good to see this!
