Powerful words from Dustin Lance Black

Dustin Lance Black gave a powerful speech this weekend while being honored by Lifeworks Mentoring, a group which offers one on one, peer and group mentoring opportunities for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth ages 14-24

Here's what he had to say:

“Like many LGBT people, I knew I was gay from a very young age so that also meant that I knew that I was less than most kids, meant that something was supposedly wrong with me,” he began. “It meant that I was a second class citizen and that according to my church, I was right down there with all the sinners and the murderers and the rapists - all 3 foot, 4 inches of me at 6 years old. And I had two options: I could shrink away, I could try not to be noticed, not to excel, and to vanish in school and in all my activities. Or, the more permanent solution which was to take my own life. And sadly, that’s not a unique ciurcumstance in our country today. Even today, one in three kids seriously contemplates suicide and gay and lesbian kids are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight brothers and sisters and nine times more likely if they come from non-accepting homes. … For those who do come out, those who do have the bravery and do survive, 26 percent - over one-quarter - are kicked out of their homes.”

Lance talked about how he was one of the lucky ones who heard the story of Harvey Milk from a theater director when he was just 14 years old.

“Not surprisingly, that story gave me hope and I didn’t want to kill myself anymore and I didn’t want to cry myself to sleep anymore. In fact, I started to dream again and I stopped trying to vanish and I started trying to excel.”

“But you know what? Like probably all of us I never heard a peep about Harvey Milk in school. I fact, I never heard a peep about any LGBT person of any consequence growing up much less having the good fortune of having a mentor or someone to turn to. It took a turn of luck for me to learn that I had a forefather, a turn of luck to discover I had someone I could look up to, and a turn of luck to save my life. And that, my brothers and sisters, that is wrong.”

“Unlike any other minorities, most LGBT kids do not come from families with gay and lesbian parents. That’s just how it is. We don’t have parents who can personally understand the inspiration, pride and steely self-worth needed to survive as a sexual minority today. We as an LGBT people are unique in that we must learn about and be inspired by our minority role models outside of our homes. That is why it is so vitally important to reach our young LGBT people today. [To] know that they have role models, that they have access to mentors and strong parental figures who they can find safety in, who they can celebrate with when the times are good and depend on when the road gets rough. We can no longer leave the future of the lives of our youth to luck, they are too valuable. Their hopes and their dreams are too precious. They are our sons and our daughters - every one of them. And it is our moral obligation to be there to catch them when they fall and to lift them up.”

Woman bites lover's penis off in car crash

A boss and his secretary who were having an affair saw their romantic tryst interrupted in a wince-inducing manner - after a car crash led her to accidentally bite his penis off.

According to reports in China Press and Sin Chew Daily, the 30-year-old woman was performing oral sex on her boss in a car in a Singapore park, when the car was struck by a reversing van.

The impact caused her to bite the man's penis off.

Just in case this wasn't already bad enough for those involved, the incident was observed by a private detective who had been sent by the woman's husband to catch them out.

He described how, shortly after parking, the car started to 'shake violently' - but then was hit by the van. He said that the woman screamed loudly, with her mouth covered in blood.

Helpfully, the investigator called an ambulance to take the man to hospital. His lover followed him there, with part of his penis.

The investigator said he's never seen an incident like it before.

The Producers Opens in Berlin!

Can Germans laugh at Hitler?

The Producers, the hit Mel Brooks musical, recently began a two-month engagement at the Admiralspalast in Berlin. This is the same theatre where Adolf himself liked to take an occasional break from invading Poland and France to enjoy light operettas from the Führer’s box.

Check out this interesting New York Times story which discusses the mixed reactions of Germans on opening night.

Director of the Miss California USA pageant
appears in ad supporting gay marriage!

Weeks after Miss California Carrie Prejean denounced gay marriage, Shanna Moakler -- the director of the Miss California USA pageant -- is appearing in a new ad supporting gay rights.

Moakler (a former Miss USA) shot a print ad Tuesday slamming Proposition 8, the initiative that bans gay marriage in California.

Joining her were two former Miss California contestants, Raquel Beezley and Tamiko Nash.

"I believe Prop 8 lead a campaign of confusion and never made clear what was being asked of the people," Moakler said in an exclusive statement to Usmagazine.com Tuesday. "I find most people have a problem with the word marriage. What I hope for is helping others understand 'civil union' and then one day helping people learn 'marriage' is something not God, not the state or country can solidify, but between two people who love each other."

Although Prejean has said she lost the Miss USA crown because of her anti-gay marriage answer, Moakler said it was because Prejean "wasn't able to convey compassion for ALL the people that, as MISS USA, she would be representing."

Stupid People Should Be Shot!

This is a new section of my blog called "Stupid People Should Be Shot." In it, I'll be putting video clips of people who say stupid things or are just plain ignorant.

Let's start off with a clip of Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-North Carolina) saying that Matthew Shepherd wasn't killed because he was gay, he was killed because of a robbery gone wrong.

In Foxx's words...

“I also would like to point out that there was a bill -- the hate crimes bill that's called the Matthew Shepard bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay."

Eminem's new music video

This is hilarious!!!

And the name of the
new Cirque du Soleil show is...

....OVO

According to CirqueDuSoleil.com, "Ovo is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew."

California Ballot Initiative Launched
to Replace "Marriage" with
"Domestic Partnership"

Two heterosexual Southern California college students submitted a ballot initiative that would replace the term "marriage" with "domestic partnership" in California.

The ballot measure was approved for circulation by Debra Bowen, California's Secretary of State. Under the rules of the initative, they must collect 694,354 signatures by August 6, 2009 to get it on the ballot.

The initiative reads....

"The Attorney General of California has prepared the following title and summary of the chief purpose and points of the proposed measure: SUBSTITUTES DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP FOR MARRIAGE IN CALIFORNIA LAW. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. Replaces the term 'marriage' with the term 'domestic partnership' throughout California law, but preserves the rights provided in marriage. Applies equally to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation. Repeals the provision in California’s Constitution that states only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: This measure would have an unknown fiscal effect on state and local governments. (09-0003.)"

Under an initiative, Californians can "directly propose and enact state laws and amendments to the California Constitution. Under the initiative process, a proposed statute or constitutional amendment must receive a specified number of valid petition signatures in order to be placed on a statewide ballot for consideration by voters."
