Passengers of Hudson plane crash
not happy with compensation

Apparently some of the survivors of the Hudson River plane crash aren't happy they only received $5,000 compensation, plus "top customer" status for one year (which gives them "first class" privileges, when available) . Some are saying the one year expiration is a slap in the face and that they deserve "first class" for life.

Obama's Fight for Gay Rights

"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."
-- Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

The Obama Administration has posted their agenda for GLBT rights on the newly redesigned White House website.

Click here for the link (or read it below).

Here's what they plan to do:

- Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. President Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, President Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.

- Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees' domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

- Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

- Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: President Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.

- Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell: President Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. The President will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.

- Expand Adoption Rights: President Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.

- Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, President Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. The President will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. The President also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. President Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma — too often tied to homophobia — that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.

- Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS: In the United States, the percentage of women diagnosed with AIDS has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. President Obama introduced the Microbicide Development Act, which will accelerate the development of products that empower women in the battle against AIDS. Microbicides are a class of products currently under development that women apply topically to prevent transmission of HIV and other infections.

Tom Hanks says Mormon Supporters of
Prop. 8 'Un-American'

At the premiere of "Big Love," HBO's controversial polygamist series, Tom Hanks, Executive Producer of the show, said:

"The truth is this takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen,” he told Tarts. “There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here's what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who's responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process."

Mock Nike ad is anti-ballet, not anti-gay!

The Nike ad that I talked about in my blog yesterday was a mock ad created by a design student. The ad was then printed in CMYK magazine...which resulted in the firestorm of criticism. Nike had nothing to do with it.

Did anyone watch American Idol last night?

I have two comments about it:

1) I think the new judge, Kara DioGuardi, is going to be good for the show...

2) What was with Ryan Seacrest attempting to give the blind auditioner (whose story brought a tear to my eye) a high five?

"The Principal's Office" on truTV

There's a new reality show airing on truTV called "The Principal's Office." The show chronicles school administrators as they deal with students who violate the rules, etc. I came across this clip on YouTube from one of the episode featuring two boys who were sent to the Principal's Office for dancing too close with girls at a dance. Watch how they give the principal a run for his money... it's hilarious!

Enjoy!

A video post for my dear friend, Calvin!

I'm thinking this should be Friday's "Fosse Friday" routine!
Please have all the moves memorized by then... (grin)

Six Secrets of Slumdog Success

Who knew that Slumdog Millionaire was originally going to be released straight to DVD. Good thing it didn't or else I don't think I would have ever had the pleasure of seeing it.

I read an interesting article from Yahoo! on why Slumdog is receiving such huge acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Beach Blanket Babylon does
Les Miserables

Beach Blanket Babylon did a hilarious parody of Les Miserables during their New Year's Eve show. It was such a hit that they are putting it into the show on a nightly basis. The cast features: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Lehman Brothers, John McCain, President George W. Bush, Bill & Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Barack & Michelle Obama and, of course, Oprah Winfrey.

The Les Mis number starts at 4 minutes and 30 seconds, but the first part of the clip is worth watching as well!

First Openly Gay Bishop to Give
Invocation at Inauguration

After the disappointing news that President-Elect Obama selected homophobe Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation at his Presidential Inauguration next week, news came out today that the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop - the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire - will kick off the Presidential Inauguration Week with an invocation on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial this Sunday.

An Obama source says that "Robinson was in the plans before the complaints about Rick Warren. Many skeptics will read this as a direct reaction to the Warren criticism - but it's just not so."

Referred to as "the most controversial Christian in the world" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Robinson faced death threats and was forced to wear a bulletproof vest during his consecration.

In June 2008, Robinson married Mark Andrew, his partner of 20 years, a move that outraged conservatives. He said he was entering a civil union because he wants his partner, as well as his two daughters from a previous marriage, to have the same legal protections afforded to heterosexual couples.

"I am simply not going to put my life in jeopardy without putting into place the protections for my beloved partner and my children and my grandchildren that are offered to me in a civil union," Robinson said. "I think any husband or wife would want to do that."

Devin's first steps...

Devin is very quickly learning to walk...here's another video of him from Christmas in Arizona!

LaToya Jackson at the Golden Globes?

Oh no, that was Mickey Rourke!

So Rourke's performace may have been brilliant in The Wrestler, but it seems like the man still has a few issues!

Overall, the Golden Globes were kind of just "blah!" I was thrilled with all of the awards "Slumdog" received. They were all duly deserved.

Symptoms of ricin -- a deadly poison with no known antidote -- include vomiting and diarrhea within the first 6-12 hours; other symptoms of ricin poisoning include hallucinations, seizures, and blood in the urine.

Bootcamp Begins Tomorrow!

I've decided that '09 is going to be the year when I get myself in better shape. Though I've already lost around 100 lbs. (see photo below), I've still got a ways to go to reach "perfection!"

Tomorrow is the first of four Saturday Bootcamp sessions that I signed up for. I'm not sure how I'm going to do, but I guess its the fact that I signed up for it that counts. It's also comforting to know that a few friends of mine will be joining me.

Wish me luck....

San Francisco's Post Street Theatre!

My colleague is working on the PR for Burn the Floor, the Ballroom and Latin dance spectacular that has thrilled audiences in more than 30 countries worldwide.

The show is a breathtaking blend of Latin and Ballroom dance first conceived during Sir Elton John's 50th birthday celebration in 1997. Monty Python's Spamalot (finally) Coming to
San Francisco!

Spamalot, Monty Python's hit musical that one the Tony Award for "Best Musical" in 2005, is finally making its way to San Francisco. Though Spamalot has been touring for a while, California wasn't allowed to get it because of the sit-down production at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. Now that the Vegas production has closed, San Francisco is fair game!

I am putting a large group together for the performance on Sunday, May 24th at 7:30 p.m.! If anyone is interested in purchasing tickets, please click here and send me an email. Tickets are $55 each.

Below is a clip of Spamalot from the 2005 Tony Awards, featuring the amazing Sara Ramirez

'Hallelujah'

This year's winner of "X Factor," Alexandra Burke, has come out with an amazing rendition of Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah." Check out the video below.

The one and only Dame Edna...

As some of you know, for the past 6 weeks I had the pleasure of working with international gigastar (to use her own words), Dame Edna Everage (aka Barry Humphries). To be honest, at first I was very nervous about working with him, but after our first meeting, I knew that we were going to have a great time. Not only is he a very generous man, but he had me in stitches every time I was around him. Here's hoping that I'll get the pleasure of working with him again!

The Must See Movie of the Year!

I saw several movies over the holiday break and I must say that a movie you must see sooner than later is Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.

The film follows the story of a young man, Jamal Malik, from the slums of Mumbai who appears on India's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." Exceeding the expectations of the host and audience, Jamal is accused of cheating and interrogated by local law enforcement. The explanation of how he knew the answers leads us through the history of his short but full life. The movie is visually beautiful (filmed entirely in India) and, at times, very hard to watch.

I highly encourage anyone who has a taste for different cultures to see this ASAP! The soundtrack, by Golden Globe nominee A.R. Rahman, is also quite amazing!

The trailer for the movie is below....

My First Post on My First Blog

Well, after years of thinking of it, I thought it was about time that I created a little home of my own on this crazy thing called the World Wide Web. After seeing the amazing job my sister did on her new blog, I was motivated to create something of my own. I'm not completely sure what I'm going to be posting on here, but I hope to live up to the blog's title, The Fabulous Adventures of KevyKev.

Here goes nothing...
